Go more niche with your videos!

When you think about making a Web Video for your biz then I suggest you pause for a second. Can you can go more niche? Everyone tends to go for a broad Video where you meet the owner, meet some staff, get a general overview of how great the whole business is from wall to wall, top to toe. But anyone who markets online knows that focussing down narrower on the benefits can be more interesting to visitors.

Case in point the Boss Hog Video above (shot on nothing more than a Flip Video Camera). It’s so simple and a perfect idea for filming on a Pocket Video Camera. The obvious route would be to do multiple interviews with owner and staff and go all glossy but this authentic Video niches down on what really matters – the food. Doing this makes me want to get my hands on that Burger even more!

I’m less interested in how good the owner thinks his/her business is and how they will give me “A warm welcome!” (and all the other cliches that are used in so many Business Videos.) Whatever business you have, how could you niche down your Videos?

    Hi Jules,

I agree that more niche is better… although I’m guilty of producing broad focused videos more often than I’d like. I found your website via a comment you left on Pat Flynn’s site. Your background is similar to mine in broadcast television. I need to check out pocket cams like the Zi8 someday but I’ve been getting great results shooting all my web videos with point-and-shoot digital cameras and DSLRs these days.

If I would’ve shot that burger video, I would’ve shot a medium shot like they did, then have them make another set of burgers and shoot close-up in macro mode to really show the texture and juices of the food. Anyways, you have a great concept for your website!

    Thanks Harian,

I am told the video was shot by the business themselves so they did a good job. One thing with the Flip is it can’t do close ups between 0 and 0.8 m so that’s a drawback, though with the magnetic Bower wideangle this issue is improved to some degree you can get a macro effect too.

The zi8 has s macro switch but again is not much use beyond macro to about 0.1 m if you need a sharp image, so with pocket cams you have to compromise and shoot around issues like that.

DSLRs are definitely the next step. I would say skip the $300 – $600 camcorders and go for a dslr if you want to step it up a level.
